I have been taking it at low-ish doses (10-20 mg) for 1.5 years now, almost daily. I take 1 or sometimes 2 days off per week unless I don’t feel well, then I may up the dose. I don’t become ill nearly as often and my head is clearer. My personal experience is excellent.

A friend takes it every day without breaks (for years now) twice per day (two pipettes morning and two afternoon). He loves it. I think he overdoes it but for him it works very well. :)

Thanks for the fascinating deep dive, Chris. I don’t understand everything but I always get something out of these posts.

A company I like, SaunaSpace, has recently been selling/pushing methylene blue along with their low EMF saunas and infrared lights...I thought of your work Chris. Maybe you should pass it along to them! I know they want to help and not hurt customers. Thank you for your work.

I got a headache reading your explanation! I have used methylelence blue before my 90-minute swimming sessions, but I haven't noticed any difference, so I stopped using it. I can swim the length of the municipal pool without surfacing, so I must be doing something right!

Sounds like you don’t need the headache.

I have used this at the first signs of a cold coming on and seriously, I have not gotten a full-blown cold since I found it.

Giorgi Dinkov and Joseph Mercola, among others, have been singing the praises of methylene blue (for those not taking SSRIs).

Unlocking the Power of Methylene Blue

https://www.theburningplatform.com/2025/01/08/unlocking-the-power-of-methylene-blue/

The therapeutic potential of methylene blue is vast and varied, extending across a spectrum of neurological and psychological conditions. Dinkov shared insights into several studies where methylene blue, even at relatively low doses of 15 to 50 milligrams (mg), demonstrated significant benefits in treating treatment-resistant depression and psychosis.2

I use to feel very unwell when I would go up to big bear mountain due to the high elevation. But the last two times I used methylene blue and experienced absolutely no symptoms! Pretty amazing stuff!!

I have a complex III deficiency AND a horrific detox profile. I use MB (2mg) 3 days on and then 3 days off. If I don’t take the 3 days off the build up gets intense and I’m angry all the time but without it over the three days off it’s still working but not becoming toxic.

For those (like me) with impaired lung function and mitochondrial inefficiencies, I’ve wondered if low dose MB would be helpful and if red light bioactivation is necessary/recommended.

Doing different things. If you’re subscribed look out for an email for how to figure this out in the next months

I am looking forward to your writeup. On youtube, Dr Jason Sonners of HBOTUSA has discussed MB with red light and HBOT to increase neurogenesis. From your writeup, if one of the limiters of MB is the oxygen, then adding more oxygen with HBOT would help that, but I have not seen good literature yet on how MB and red light work together.

Yes but going straight to MB for a chronic problem isn't wise.

Curious if you heard Gary Brecka on JRE and what you know about putting hydrogen tabs in water? I definitely can’t afford the other biohacks but a buck or so a day is doable if it works as great as he claims.

It’s on my list to look into.

I think the Kennedy thing with mb was a setup. I’m inherently skeptical, and even more so these days. I believe it was to egg all these blue mouthed ppl on TikTok and YouTube on. Don’t know why…well I think I do, but that’s maybe inconsequential.

OK, what about the use of methylene blue as an antifungal? I have used it in dealing with mucosal candidiasis. I take the methylene blue and then sit in front of infrared light to activate it once it has entered the bloodstream. Thoughts?

It is antifungal, yes.

I only take MB when I feel run down and sometimes use it in conjunction with red light therapy. I notice my urine does not turn blue after spending time under the near infra red light. Any thoughts?

My wife, who is now 58, has been troubled with urinary tract infections since she started having her period as a young girl. She gets them less frequently now that she's in menopause, maybe two or three times a year. She takes DMSO, d-mannose, and methylene blue and it knocks the infection right out in a day or two. She takes a dropper full, around 1 ml. of mb. Should I be worried about this usage?

I don't have info about MB and UTIs, but here's some info for your wife in case it helps.

I had chronic UTI's for decades, probably due to scarring at ureter/bladder juncture from prior surgeries.

The biggest help for me was:

1. Herbs: uva ursi tea is the best. Goldenseal is excellent too. I use immediately after first trace of symptoms, and continue for two days. Typically nips UTI's in the bud.

2. Femdophilus--probiotics that end up migrating to urinary tract and help fend off the bad bacteria. Helpfulness backed by studies.

Best wishes!

I was under the impression that MAO inhibition didn't occur until at least .5mg/kg intravenously and > 200mg orally? Also, I appreciate your work on this (no one is talking about this rewiring of the ETC) and I'm going to stop taking it. I've been taking it for a few months, about 20mg daily as a nootropic. Do you think there is the possibility of permanent damage at that dosage of use for about 3 months??

Expand full comment
Chris Masterjohn, PhD's avatar

I doubt any damage is permanent. I don’t know what that claim is based on it’s probably based on minimal doses to cause serotonin syndrome which is irrationally “medical” in its approach. I’m using the pharmacokinetics, brain to plasma ratio (in animals), and concentration for half maximal inhibition. I don’t know if any studies that actually look at the question directly, which would require looking at serotonin oxidation byproducts on different doses.

Thanks Chris. I'll just reserve it for rare uses like flying. Also as an FYI, I took it liberally when I had a respiratory virus recently and it seemed to really help with severity and sped up recovery. Again, suggesting targeted uses vs daily, long-term use.

Something else to keep in mind (mentioned in Chris's methylene blue guide post linked at end here) is that methylene blue has some antimicrobial properties, hypothetically through driving the hydrogen peroxide production discussed in this post. This antimicrobial effect may have been what you felt during your illness.
